Who do you people think you are?

We think we're a couple of journalists who spend an unhealthy amount of time reading newspapers and fretting about the decline and fall of western civilization. Why, who do you think we are?

Jonn Elledge lives in London and ekes out a living writing about politics and the public sector. He has blogged for the New Statesman and was on the editorial team of late lamented webzine ak13.

Aaron Lovell lives in New York City and writes about high finance. His writing has been described as having "the velveteen touch of a dandy fop."


What are you going on about?

Atlantic Rift's intentionally vague remit is US and UK politics and the cultural differences between the two countries. We aim to provide enough historical and economic context in our posts to give readers on the other side of the Atlantic a more complete, if idiosyncratic, view of what's going on in Westminster and Washington than they'd get from reading pure opinion.

However, we take a pretty holistic view of things, and think that events in the Anglosphere are sometimes a lot easier to understand from the perspective of Brussels, Beijing, or Baghdad. This is why you'll see the occasional post on the German economy, or the latest War-on-Terror related high-jinx in Australia. Plus, you know, we're interested in this stuff.

Basically, we're thinking about where the West is going (hint: look
downwards).


You're not more of those whiny liberals, are you?

Yes, but we try not to be too dogmatic about it. On the whole, we'd rather have a conversation with an informed right-winger than an ignorant lefty - what's the point in going through life having your prejudices confirmed?

Though if you insist on conflating "liberal" with "socialist", "communist" or "idiot", please don’t expect us to take you seriously.
